Why an August Senior Session is a Great Idea
Senior year is such an exciting time, and one of the best ways to kick it off is with a summer portrait session! Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a high school senior who chose to do his shoot in August before the school year began. It was the perfect way to capture this milestone while taking advantage of all the benefits that come with a summer session.
One of the biggest perks of scheduling a senior session in August is the flexibility. Without the demands of a full school day, sports, and extracurricular activities, seniors have more time to plan and enjoy their session. This allows for a relaxed and fun experience without the added stress of a packed schedule.
Another great reason to book early? It gives families plenty of time to receive their photos and use them for graduation announcements, yearbook submissions, and gifts for family and friends. Instead of rushing to squeeze in a last-minute session in the spring, an August shoot means having everything ready well in advance.
This particular senior was fantastic to work with—confident, easygoing, and excited about the session. He wanted a very urban vibe, so we headed to the U Street corridor of downtown Washington, DC. The area provided so many cool murals for backgrounds, giving his photos a vibrant and dynamic look. In addition, he brought his drumsticks and guitar to show off some of his interests and skills, adding a unique personal touch to the shoot. It was a really fun, high-energy session that perfectly captured his personality.
I was also able to sneak in a few pictures with mom and dad, creating some beautiful family moments to complement his individual portraits. The late summer light was absolutely perfect, adding warmth and depth to his images.
